There’s a pretty cool article in GridToday talking about the development of the the extreme transaction platform segment.
Only one year ago, Gartner analyst Massimo Pezzini described grid-based application platforms as a burgeoning technology that might just be ready to tackle the demands of extreme transaction processing (XTP) environments …
In an October 2007 report … Pezzini wrote that many XTP-enabling technologies — including grid-based application platforms — are “technically credible” alternatives to traditional application servers
Put simply: grid-based application platforms are for real, and true extreme transaction-processing platforms (XTPP) are on the horizon.
It’s great to see Massimo acknowledge the progress that our industry is making in real applications with real customers.
The story covers ourselves, one of our customers, and ObjectGrid.
What’s interesting about this is how well ObjectGrid can work within the Appistry execution / operational framework. Very complementary … all in all a very interesting combination.
Billy Newport makes a pretty good observation about the marketplace as it develops for XTTP:
There are many normal customers that are just running into walls in terms of data growth, datacenter power woes, etc., who want a solution that will fit in with what they’re already doing as unobtrusively as possible, said Newport. He added that the latter group is probably the bigger market opportunity.
We’re seeing the same thing … sometimes it’s about uber-low latency, but far more often it’s about data / transaction volume (aggregate scale), operational flexibility, and overall cost.
That you can get all of that plus development simplicity and increased levels of reliability is I think the real untold-story of this stuff.
That’s part of why it’s a great time to be in this biz.
