version of grid OS

Hi,

I believe that all grid machines on the same fabric have to be on the same OS. Is it sufficient that they are the same "flavour" of OS (Windows versus Linux versus UNIX) or do they have to have the exact OS version too (for e.g. Windows XP Professional SP 3).

The reason I am asking is that we would like to be able to utilize a variety of user desktops by hooking them up to the grid during the night. All of them run windows but some of them have differing versions of XP and some may be Vista.

Thanks

That is a very good question since the installation packages are the same for Windows.

Officially, we only test with Fabrics with the identical operating systems. Service pack differences are not likely going to cause a problem. However, I cannot state for sure that all Windows would be able to play nice with each other in a fabric.

If you want to test it out, it is not likely that it will cause you any harm, but we cannot support it if there are any issues that are caused by this Windows OS mismatch.

At the worst, you can uninstall the fabric on those boxes if it doesn't work out.

We ran some basic tests over night, and it seemed to work fine with a mixed Fabric of Vista Business SP1, Server 2003 SP2, and XP SP2.

Although we do not recommend it for a production environment, we will support heterogeneous Windows fabrics.
